Underwear,in the prehistoric form of the loincloth,was the first garment ever devised.

Given that it was also the only piece of clothing around, underwear was in fact outer-wear. But “prehistoric” is the keyword. Growing up we were taught showing your underwear was cheap and a definite no-no!

Times are a’changing,though. In the 1980s wearing lingerie as outer-wear was popularised by the likes of Madonna. If you just have to follow suit, here’s how:

• Silk camisoles, lace corsets,colourful bras and structured, vintage designs are all part of this boudoir-inspired trend. If your aim is to look elegant and polished, keep your lingerie-inspired look simple – and don’t expose too much skin.

• The key to flaunting your underwear in 2010 is to keep it simple and small. Don’t wear a pair of unsightly knickers over your pants. You will not and never will be superman!

• Don’t wear a corset outside the bedroom if you have a muffin top. Leave it to the skinny gals.

• If you have a curvy figure and insist on wearing a corset, slip it on with a stunningly tailored suit with a jacket nipped in at the waist and a sexy pencil skirt; slip the sculpted corset top underneath so your lingerie plays peek-a-boo. A silky camisole is also effective and looks more casual.

• For a sophisticated take, wear a sheer silk blouse with a cami showing through. Keep your colour palette soft.

• Lace pieces such as body suits are a great way to ease into the underwear-outerwear trend; they are literally everywhere and easily teamed with skirts and shorts. Try it with a pair of silk shorts and a blazer for class.

• It seems the general rule is that if it’s lacy it’s worthy. Lace leggings are pretty cool these days and come in a variety of colours.

• If you are less daring and want to show off less skin. wear a bustier under a boyfriend’s jacket.

• Layering is an original and creative way to wear seductive statement pieces,still feeling confident as you are staying on the moderate side.

• Create a stunning appearance by accessorising with delicate pearls and complete your look with a trendy handbag and shoes.

• Baby doll nightwear can spice up a pair of summer shorts for a day at the beach or your favourite mini skirt for a night out on the town.

• Keep it tasteful.

• What matters is how comfortable you feel wearing it and how reflective of your own personal style the trend is.
