Thato Mokhou
Junior Field Reporter
Brief intro
I’m driven, self-motivated and open for challenges. Full of energy and equipped with communication skills I strive to give the best I can to my work and profession.
Born & bred in Johannesburg, I’m proudly South African!
Brief professional background
I’m currently doing my Honours in Journalism @Wits. I graduated with a BA degree and majored in English and Linguistics.
I’m also currently working for Redbull South Africa as a sampler. I’ve done media work for Media24 and Big Media.
What is your position & how do you spend your work time?
Junior Field Reporter – I spend my work time researching and consuming news from all around the world. I also conduct ‘live’ reports for YFM News with specific focus on campus life in Jozi Universities and colleges.
When did you get your break in radio?
In March 2010 when YFM News Editor Zukile Majova gave me a call.
What’s the best thing about the job?
Exposure to a world of news and media. Reporting on the biggest news and just simply being on radio.
What’s the worst thing about the job?
The worst thing about this job is… There’s nothing yet.
Why do you prefer radio over print media?
Radio is instantaneous and exciting. The stories are shorter, concise and sharp. Radio sharpens my writing skills and I think it offers a better experience.
What was your most embarrassing moment on air?
Mispronounced names and stumbled while reading..
Are social networking websites [Facebook, Twitter etc] good for journalism?
Facebook and Twitter are great for journalism because they help journos in tune with news and also as it happens.
These social networks provide a platform for citizen journalism that we as professional journalists need as sources.
A lot of things are happening around people and people report on the most news relevant things. These sites also offer a democratic stage for journalism.
