Samantha Wright
Sub-Editor
Brief intro
I’m extremely passionate with many loves and interests – Manchester United and Tequila being close to the top of the list.
Brief professional background
I worked at UJFM and two sport publications before joining the Y Team.
I have a BA Journalism degree from the University of Johannesburg and am currently studying for an honours degree in Communication Science.
What is your position & how do you spend your work time?
I’m the sub-editor in the news department and improve the style and formatting of news bulletins, while also ensuring all stories are accurate and comply with the YFM News Editorial policy.
When did you get your break in radio?
UJFM was where I got my first taste for radio, but I then spent some time sharpening my skills in print journalism before returning to broadcasting.
What’s the best thing about the job?
The best thing about my job is the great stories we get to share with the Yires.
I also enjoy being able to give a platform to organizations or people with great ideas or opportunities for our listeners.
What’s the worst thing about the job?
The worst thing about my job is when inaccurate information goes on air, because then I haven’t done my job correctly.
Why do you prefer radio over print media?
I think radio is better than print media because it is much more personal and conversational.
I also think it reaches a much larger audience than print.
What was your most embarrassing moment on air?
I’ve never had an embarrassing moment on air – but my demo recording during my job interview was pretty embarrassing because I was so nervous!
Are social networking websites [Facebook, Twitter etc] good for journalism?
Social networking sites are changing journalism. The public is sourcing its own stories and citizen journalism is on the increase.
Social networking sites also give journalists great leads for possible stories and new information they cannot get elsewhere.
