Mxolisi Masango
Weekend Newsreader
Brief intro
Mxolisi is a vibey and full-of-energy young man, who likes having fun, but also being informed and in touch with the going-ons of the world. I’d like to believe I’m carefree, compassionate, humble and currently enjoying being young and talented in Mzansi.
Brief professional background
I have a certificate in audio-visual communications, obtained through a leading communication school (JB Casting). I’m currently a final year BA (media and law) student at the University of the Witwatersrand. I’ve done quite a considerable amount of work in television, including a cameo role on the etv drama Jozi Streets and hosted the official MTN “Ayoba Summer” tour which took place in some of Mzansi’s most loved cities including Cape Town and East London.
What is your position & how do you spend your work time?
I’m a weekend newsreader. I basically compile and read leading news stories – which are mostly sports on weekends.
When did you get your break in radio?
It was in 2009, after months of calling the news editor almost everyday to get him to try me out. Hard work, persistence and perseverance got me through…hah hah hah.
What’s the best thing about the job?
It’s the fact that you get to learn something new everyday, without having to actually get a book and read. Also the vibe and knowledge you get from other talented peeps in the Y newsroom is just too phenomenal!!!
What’s the worst thing about the job?
We work under a lot of pressure, however once a story is read LIVE on air, it’s all worth it!!!
Why do you prefer radio over print media?
Radio is very exciting, people don’t really read these days, so if a person doesn’t want to pick up a newspaper and read, we always there to inform them of what’s happening around in the world.
Another exciting thing about radio is that we can be more reliable than print media cause we get sound bites as well!!!
What was your most embarrassing moment on air?
I haven’t had one, but anything can still happen.
Are social networking websites [Facebook, Twitter etc] good for journalism?
They would have a lot of potential to be credible news sources only if they were sufficiently regulated!
