Minister of Basic Education Angie Motsekga will meet with other ministers and representatives from teachers’ union Sadtu to try and avert the strike called by the union yesterday.
This follows Sadtu decision to call a wage strike from the 5th August - if government does not improve its wage offer within the next seven days.
Sadtu is demanding an 8.6% salary increase - R 1 000 housing allowance - amendments to the medical aid subsidy and that increases should be backdated to April 1.
Talks deadlocked with government offering a 6.5% salary increase – and offering to increase the housing subsidy by R120 from R500 to R620 a month.
Department spokesperson Granville Whittle – says the minister is confident that the strike will be averted.
