The Johannesburg Metro Police Department has warned motorists – some roads in the Joburg CBD will be closed this morning as more than 14 000 public servants embark on a strike in the city.

JMPD Superintendent Edna Mamonyane says Bree, Simmonds, Fox and Jeppe streets will be closed to motorists – as striking workers will make their way to Premier Nomvula Mokonyane’s office to hand over a memorandum of demands.

More than 200 000 members of the Public Servants Association go on a nationwide strike today.

They are demanding an 8.6% salary increase and a housing subsidy of R1 000 a month – while government is offering a 6.5% wage hike.
