As CEO, Kanthan is responsible for the strategic direction of the Yired group of companies including Yfm, Y Mag, and Y World.

"The single lesson I try to pass on to everyone is to to choose to think. In the words of Stephen Bantu Biko, ‘The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.' In the words of Robert Nestor Marley, ‘Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; none but ourselves can free our minds'. "

Mike's career in radio dates back to 1989 as a production assistant for what was then Radio RSA - SABC's external service which became Channel Africa.
He spent close to a year thereafter travelling overseas returning to work for Channel Africa, BRFM, and Radio Algoa (today Algoa FM) in a variety of roles including Technical Consultant , Operations Engineer, Outside Broadcasts, Standby Traffic scheduling, Building maintenance, Production Engineer, production of all station imaging product - promos, stingers, inserts etc, maintaining on-air RCS playout system and providing technical backup and support in a standby capacity to on-air staff in emergency.
Mike was responsible for the "Spot Factory" - Algoa FM's in-house production facility that records and produces commercials for a wide range of local and national clients. That experience led to his being asked to aid the set up of Y Lab which he has helped run for 4 years before being appointed Technical Manager in July 2007. As Technical Manager, he is also responsible for IT.
Mike says he welcomes new challenges. "I'm really looking forward to being directly involved in all the new and exciting things that are about to happen at Y".

Shane's career process has led him into the realms of Investments, Audits, Fund Management, Reinsurance and now HR. He explains that the most applicable "education" has been through the "doing" of the job, and not just the book learning or courses. He reckons that HR has taken on a larger role in business; from "doing to planning". "The HR professional's role has evolved from being centred around administration and processing to being a more value-added, strategic, focused partnership role. These days the time previously devoted to paperwork and process can now be focused on people and partnerships. The most rewarding aspect of HR is turning an employee around and helping him or her become a productive member of the team."
Shane is currently working towards registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

The radio bug bit Stephan in 2001 when he started as a presenter on a student radio stations graveyard slot. He became involved in all the different departments to learn all he could. This paid off as he became part of management and finally took over as the Station Manager of RAU Radio at the end of 2004.
RAU Radio transformed into UJFM 95.4 and went live on 13 March 2006. Stephan remained active in all the departments of the station and still took care of the music selection on UJFM 95.4. His zeal for radio helped him build UJFM 95.4 to a credible, well-respected community radio station that broadcast to a large audience in Johannesburg. With his help, this also served as a platform for radio talent to be placed with bigger commercial radio stations.
Stephan’s contribution to radio and the development of radio professionals saw that he was asked to lead and train the first group of Y-Academics in September 2007, an initiative by YFM. Due to this success, he is currently busy with the third group and will continue building on this great radio training initiative.
He remains committed to developing radio talent in all departments and keeps up to date with all new media advancements on a constant basis. All this, while trying to keep radio hot.
Stephan now heads up the Strategy and Development department at YFM and is looking forward to a great road ahead for this dynamic brand.

Tamaria grew up as an "exile baby" spending most of her early childhood in Belgium (where she learnt to speak French fluently) and thereafter in the UK where she completed her high school education. After high school she went onto to complete her BA (Hons) at Leeds Metropolitan University.
With the 1994 elections and democracy in South Africa her family returned home. In 1997, Tamaria decided to follow. Upon returning to SA she began working for and spent many years at Coca-Cola Southern Africa where she developed her passion for marketing and youth related brands. Highlights during her career at Coca-Cola include: working in France during the FIFA World Cup; in Chicago for the Sprite Basketball Hoop Tour; on the Fanta Fun Bus and Coca-Cola Popstars 1 & 2. It was whilst working on Coca-Cola Popstars that she was able to indulge her life long passion for music and where she decided to further her career in the entertainment industry.
Over the years, Tamaria has been involved and worked on some of the biggest events in the South African entertainment industry. She names handling the publicity/PR for the JA Rule and Beyonce SA tours as among the most interesting.
She describes joining the YFM team as one of the most exciting and positively challenging times in her career. After working on globally recognised brands the opportunity to work on South Africa¹s most pioneering youth radio stations has been rewarding in many ways.
Tamaria and her team have been behind some of the hottest and biggest parties in GP - from the popular Kasi Tours, to Club Y and VIP parties held in some of Jhb's most exclusive venues. She is in her element when she is out with the Y team inspiring and entertaining the Y massive. Tamaria believes very strongly that today's SA youth have the talent and ability to create a remarkable impression on their world and on the world at large.

Tumelo was born and raised in the Eastern Cape and completed his primary and high schooling there. He then went on to study for a year in Durban and completed a certificate in Human Resources Management. A year later he interned at a film production company for a few months and later went into the hospitality industry. In 2001 he enrolled at Wits Technikon (now known as UJ) for a National Diploma in Public Relations, which he completed in 2003. After graduating he joined Primedia Broadcasting, home of 94.7 Highveld Stereo and Talk Radio 702. He then stayed at Primedia for a period of four and half years changing roles from PR Intern, Marketing Assistant and eventually moved into the Research Department. Over this time his passion for radio grew immensely and he was mentored by some of the best brains in the radio industry. In 2007 he moved to Media 24 Family Magazines as a Research Executive, working on some of the group’s best portfolio of publications such as You / Huisgenoot and Drum. The radio bug had hit and almost a year later he joined 99.2 Yfm as Senior Research Executive, helping the Programming and Sales Departments with market intelligence insights. A year later, January 2009, he was appointed to be the station's acting Programming Manager, where he has been instrumental in helping shape the forthcoming 2009-2010 line-up.
Tumelo describes himself as an ambitious young man with a great passion for radio who spends most of his time glued to this medium.

Zukile Majova is a journalism graduate of the Durban Institute of Technology. He is still in culture shock and adjusting to the challenge of working in an environment filled with black people (his previous employer was the Mail and Guardian). Now, as News Editor, he is responsible for news, sport, and current affairs at Yfm and Y World.
Zukile sees himself as an aspirant writer from uMvuzi village. He thinks South Africa is a better country than it was pre-1994 and that president Thabo Mbeki is right when he said, "today is better than yesterday". He also correctly predicted Jacob Zuma's victory in Polokwane many months ahead of the conference when most journalists were predicting his downfall. More to the point, he is optimistic about the future under the new ANC leadership.
In his own words: "There is no taking away the fact that today is a million times better than yesterday and tomorrow brings with it new opportunities. I submit that young and emerging writers carry the responsibility of telling this exciting story of the new South Africa and mirror this society to itself without conforming to racist convictions that will only divide us and deny us our quest to become the rainbow nation that we aspire to be. Emerging writers are standing on the brink of history and have imbibed enough of this euphoria and excitement that is evident in all sectors in our country. They should get out of the camps and tell our story, to ourselves and outside the racist pre-1994 camps.
"It is a story that is yet to be told, or is being edited out of our newspapers, but it is true; our democracy is maturing and this country is working. A new leadership will continue leading the nation towards a better day and the sky will not cave in. Contrary to what we read each day, the natives are getting it right."
