Kanthan Pillay - CEOKanthan Pillay


As CEO, Kanthan is responsible for the strategic direction of the Yired group of companies including Yfm, Y Mag, and Y World.

Kanthan is passionate about training and development and believes the key to unlocking the country’s potential is for business leaders to take personal responsibility for passing on skills to new generations. He agreed to run Yfm after the board of directors gave their full support for his plan to set up the Y Academy. He personally designed the curriculum (he is accredited as an Assessor and Mentor at NQF 5 by the ETDP SETA) and teaches classes for three hours every week. "The single lesson I try to pass on to everyone is to to choose to think. In the words of Stephen Bantu Biko, ‘The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.’ In the words of Robert Nestor Marley, ‘Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; none but ourselves can free our minds’. "

Kanthan was born in 1961, Durban, South Africa; completed high school in Bangalore, India; and majored in Political Science, Princeton University. He has certificates in journalism from Boston University College of Communication and from the Senior Journalist Development Programme, Niemann Foundation, Harvard University. Previous satisfied employers include; Independent Newspapers; the Center for Advanced Studies, Research, and Development in Sardinia; and Princeton University.

Winston Goldin - SalesWinston Goldin

Sales Manager

Winston started at the Y Family as an AE (Account Executive and worked his way up the ladder to become the Sales Manager. He has a vast amount of Experience in Sales and has worked for numerous, successful corporate companies as an account and marketing executive.

He is a hard worker and has proven his experience by leading a dynamic Yona Ke Yona Team in the sales department.

Marketing Manager

Tamaria grew up as an "exile baby" spending most of her early childhood in Belgium (where she learnt to speak French fluently) and thereafter in the UK where she completed her high school education. After high school she went onto to complete her BA (Hons) at Leeds Metropolitan University.

With the 1994 elections and democracy in South Africa her family returned home. In 1997, Tamaria decided to follow. Upon returning to SA she began working for and spent many years at Coca-Cola Southern Africa where she developed her passion for marketing and youth related brands. Highlights during her career at Coca-Cola include: working in France during the FIFA World Cup; in Chicago for the Sprite Basketball Hoop Tour; on the Fanta Fun Bus and Coca-Cola Popstars 1 & 2. It was whilst working on Coca-Cola Popstars that she was able to indulge her life long passion for music and where she decided to further her career in the entertainment industry.

Over the years, Tamaria has been involved and worked on some of the biggest events in the South African entertainment industry. She names handling the publicity/PR for the JA Rule and Beyonce SA tours as among the most interesting.

She describes joining the YFM team as one of the most exciting and positively challenging times in her career. After working on globally recognised brands the opportunity to work on South Africa¹s most pioneering youth radio stations has been rewarding in many ways.

Tamaria and her team have been behind some of the hottest and biggest parties in GP – from the popular Kasi Tours, to Club Y and VIP parties held in some of Jhb’s most exclusive venues. She is in her element when she is out with the Y team inspiring and entertaining the Y massive. Tamaria believes very strongly that today’s SA youth have the talent and ability to create a remarkable impression on their world and on the world at large.

Mike Penny

Technical Manager

He spent close to a year thereafter travelling overseas returning to work for Channel Africa, BRFM, and Radio Algoa (today Algoa FM) in a variety of roles including Technical Consultant , Operations Engineer, Outside Broadcasts, Standby Traffic scheduling, Building maintenance, Production Engineer, production of all station imaging product – promos, stingers, inserts etc, maintaining on-air RCS playout system and providing technical backup and support in a standby capacity to on-air staff in emergency.

Mike was responsible for the "Spot Factory" – Algoa FM’s in-house production facility that records and produces commercials for a wide range of local and national clients. That experience led to his being asked to aid the set up of Y Lab which he has helped run for 4 years before being appointed Technical Manager in July 2007. As Technical Manager, he is also responsible for IT.

Mike says he welcomes new challenges. "I’m really looking forward to being directly involved in all the new and exciting things that are about to happen at Y".

Tumelo Diaho-Monaheng - ProgrammingTumelo Diaho-Monaheng

Programming Manager

Tumelo was born and raised in the Eastern Cape and completed his primary and high schooling there. He then went on to study for a year in Durban and completed a certificate in Human Resources Management. A year later he interned at a film production company for a few months and later went into the hospitality industry. In 2001 he enrolled at Wits Technikon (now known as UJ) for a National Diploma in Public Relations, which he completed in 2003.

After graduating he joined Primedia Broadcasting, home of 94.7 Highveld Stereo and Talk Radio 702. He then stayed at Primedia for a period of four and half years changing roles from PR Intern, Marketing Assistant and eventually moved into the Research Department. Over this time his passion for radio grew immensely and he was mentored by some of the best brains in the radio industry. In 2007 he moved to Media 24 Family Magazines as a Research Executive, working on some of the group’s best portfolio of publications such as You / Huisgenoot and Drum.

The radio bug had hit and almost a year later he joined 99.2 Yfm as Senior Research Executive, helping the Programming and Sales Departments with market intelligence insights. A year later, January 2009, he was appointed to be the station’s acting Programming Manager, where he has been instrumental in helping shape the forthcoming 2009-2010 line-up.

Tumelo describes himself as an ambitious young man with a great passion for radio who spends most of his time glued to this medium.
